On this date in 1970, Paul McCartney announced that The Beatles, after a 10-year run that included 20 number-one Billboard songs (including occupying the first five slots of the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1964 – a feat that has never been accomplished by anyone else) were breaking up.
The group had not performed in public since January 1969, when they gave their famous (and oft-imitated) impromptu concert on the roof of their Apple recording studios in London.
Their final album, Let it Be, was released shortly after the announcement.
